Let’s Be Honest: A Quick-Reflection Guide for You and Your Dog
By Tamara Tokash.
You say you love your dog. But does what you say match what you do? Use these prompts to reflect, laugh a little, and maybe… make a few small changes. Your dog will thank you.
1. Time Alone vs. Time Together
- Am I giving my dog quality time or am I scrolling Instagram while they stare at the wall?
- Do they get fresh air, sunshine, and exploration daily… or is “exploring” just sniffing the Amazon boxes at the door?
- Have I found a healthy balance between bonding and independence or is my dog starting to believe we’re surgically attached?
2. House Training Realities
- Did I invest the time to actually teach my dog where to eliminate… or am I hoping they learn through osmosis?
- Have I sought expert guidance when needed or do I just keep buying bigger bottles of carpet cleaner?
- Am I frustrated with my dog… when maybe, just maybe, they actually need more direction from me?
3. Destructive Behaviors
- Have I provided safe, healthy outlets for chewing and play or is the $200 shoe collection basically their enrichment program?
- Do I expect my dog to “just know” what’s off-limits, as if they’ve secretly read the house rules?
- Am I setting them up for success or leaving temptations within easy reach?
(Example: Are they really a “counter surfer”… or is the truth that we’ve turned the kitchen into an all-you-can-eat buffet?)
4. Social Skills & Emotional Comfort
- Have I slowly introduced my dog to new people, dogs, and places or did I just throw them into a dog park and hope for the best?
- Am I noticing their subtle signs of discomfort or assuming “tail tucked, whites of the eyes showing” means they’re having fun?
- Do I expect social skills to magically appear without consistent practice… like they’re enrolled in Hogwarts for Dogs?
5. Weight, Diet & Exercise
- Am I feeding biologically appropriate foods… or whatever was on sale in the “Big Bag O’ Mystery Kibble” aisle?
- Have I checked for health issues like thyroid imbalances or am I assuming they “just have big bones”?
- Does my dog get enough movement and mental enrichment each day… or is their Fitbit crying in the corner?
- Am I showing love with food when what they actually need is play, connection, or a sniffari in the backyard?
Remember
Honesty isn’t about guilt-tripping yourself, it’s about awareness. It’s about being in congruency. And maybe a little laughter along the way. When we tell ourselves the truth, we create more balance, connection, and happiness, for us and our dogs.
And here’s one final question to sit with:
“Is my dog really giving me a hard time… or am I overlooking the fact that he’s having a hard time?” That single shift in perspective changes everything.
