Can Dogs Sense Energy? What Your Pet May Be Picking Up On That You Can’t See
By Laura Muzal.
Have you ever noticed your pet acting differently before you even realized that something had changed?
Maybe your dog suddenly becomes more attentive when you are upset. Your cat comes and sits beside you when you are having a difficult day. Your horse becomes nervous before a storm arrives. Or perhaps your pet seems hesitant to enter a room that feels completely normal to you.
Animals are incredibly observant. They experience the world through senses that are often much more sensitive than ours, allowing them to pick up on subtle changes that we may not even notice. But could they also be sensing something beyond what we can see, hear, smell, or touch?
For those of us who work with animals holistically, this is an interesting question.
Animals Notice More Than We Realize
Before we get into energy healing, it is important to recognize just how much information animals can gather from their environment.
Animals can notice changes in body language, facial expressions, breathing, posture, voice, and even scent. Many animals can also detect sounds and smells that humans cannot. These abilities can help explain why a pet may seem to know when something is different before we consciously recognize it ourselves.
For example, when we are stressed, our breathing may change, our muscles may become tense, and our behavior may be different. Our bodies can also produce subtle changes in scent. A sensitive animal may pick up on these signals immediately.
This is one reason our pets can sometimes seem almost psychic.
But there may be another layer to the way animals experience the world.
What Do We Mean By “Energy”?
When holistic practitioners talk about an animal’s energy, we aren’t necessarily talking about something that can be seen or measured in the same way as body temperature or heart rate.
Energy healing is based on the idea that living beings have an energetic field and that imbalances or disruptions in that energy may affect how an animal feels or functions. Different energy healing practices use different approaches, including Reiki, intuitive energy work, and other forms of energetic balancing.
Animals often seem naturally receptive to this type of work.
Unlike humans, they generally aren’t trying to decide whether they believe in it. They aren’t analyzing what is happening or wondering whether it will work. They simply respond to what they experience.
Sometimes an animal may become very relaxed during an energy healing session. They may lie down, yawn, take deeper breaths, become sleepy, or simply seem more peaceful. Other animals may move around, change positions, or choose to leave and come back when they are ready.
There is no single “right” response.
Animals May Be More Sensitive Than We Are
One of the things I find especially fascinating about working with animals is how differently they can respond to subtle changes.
Animals live very much in the present moment. They aren’t distracted by the same thoughts, expectations, and assumptions that humans carry around. Because of this, they may notice subtle changes in their environment or in the people and animals around them without consciously thinking about them.
This can include changes in the emotional state of the people they are bonded with.
Have you ever had your pet come over and stay close to you when you were sad, even though you hadn’t said anything? Or noticed that your animal behaves differently when you are anxious or upset?
There are certainly physical and behavioral explanations for these responses, but from a holistic perspective, we can also consider the possibility that animals are responding to changes in our energy and emotional state.
Can Your Energy Affect Your Pet?
Our relationship with our animals is incredibly interconnected. When we are calm and grounded, our pets may respond to that calmness. When we are stressed or emotionally overwhelmed, they may pick up on that too.
This doesn’t mean that every behavior or health issue is caused by a pet parent’s energy. Animals can have very real physical, environmental, nutritional, and behavioral needs that should never be overlooked.
Instead, I think of energy as one more layer to consider.
Energy healing can be used as a complementary practice to support an animal’s overall well-being and relaxation. It should not replace appropriate veterinary care, but it can be another tool in a holistic approach to caring for the whole animal.
Trust What Your Animal Is Telling You
One of the most important things we can do as pet parents is learn to pay attention.
Your animal may communicate through changes in behavior, posture, appetite, sleep, social interaction, or simply the way they respond to their environment. Sometimes these subtle changes are easy to dismiss, especially when we don’t understand what they mean.
Whether your animal is responding to a change in scent, body language, emotion, their environment, or something we don’t yet fully understand, their behavior is giving us information.
We don’t have to have all the answers to listen.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful things about energy work is that it encourages us to slow down, become more present, and pay closer attention to the animals in our lives. Instead of always trying to make them do something or change a behavior, we can take a moment to simply observe.
Our animals may be picking up on far more than we realize.
And sometimes, when we become quiet enough to notice, they can teach us something about energy, connection, and being present that we might never have discovered on our own.
