This Nobel Prize Winning Quantum Physicist Figured Out How Dogs Heal: And Your Dog Already Lives It.
By Jeff Feinman, VMD, CVH.
In June, our dogs often step outside and just pause.
They sniff. They sense. They are completely, utterly present — and if we get quiet enough, we can feel it too.
And in those moments, healing is already happening.
Not from a pill. From life itself.
Learning from the Smartest Doctor
Almost a hundred years ago, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Erwin Schrödinger wrote a small, remarkable book called What is Life. Using the same mind which won the Nobel prize in Quantum physics, this friend and colleague of Einstein, tried to understand how do living systems stay ordered, alive, and balanced in a world that naturally tends toward chaos?
His answer pointed toward something deeply familiar — the constant exchange between a living being and its environment. Light. Energy. Information. Connection.
As a science nerd, I find this thrilling. Because the same laws that govern all of nature give us a roadmap for healing our pets.
This quantum framework applies to our dogs like it does for all living beings. makes the path we can follow the smartest doctor in the world.
Dr. Mother Nature.
She doesn’t rush. She doesn’t suppress. She doesn’t fight symptoms as enemies. She restores balance. And our dogs still live very close to her.
Health Is More Than What We Measure
Most veterinarians have seen dogs with perfectly normal test results who just don’t seem like themselves.
And most pet parents have seen a dog carrying a serious diagnosis who still brightens at the sound of your voice, still wags their tail, still finds joy in rolling in a sunny patch of grass.
True health runs deeper than any lab result.
Our four-legged companions seem to know this instinctively. They heal by following Dr. Mother Nature’s roadmap and naturally adapt, recover, and wag their way through it all.
For us two-legged animals, it’s not always so natural. But it can be simple.
And it’s what every dog deserves.
Your Dog’s Body Is a Living System
Gardeners know that when you pull a weed, you go for the root. Miss it, and it grows back.
Immunologist Irun Cohen spent a career proving that the immune system isn’t an army — it’s a gardener. It doesn’t just fight. It tends. It learns. It’s always working to maintain balance and keep your dog healthy.
This is your dog’s terrain.
The richer and more balanced it is, the more resilient they become. When it’s depleted or overwhelmed, small stressors take hold more easily — like weeds in depleted soil.
So the question becomes, how do I help this whole garden grow stronger?
Start With BEAM
One of the simplest, most loving tools you have is BEAM — Behavior, Energy, Appetite, and Mood.
Think of it as your dog’s daily weather report.
Is your dog acting like themselves? Do they have their usual energy? Are they enjoying food? Do they seem content, engaged, at ease?
Your dog can’t sit you down over tea and say “I’m feeling a little less resilient this week.” But their BEAM tells you a lot. A slight dip in enthusiasm on a walk. A little less sparkle at mealtime. A new clinginess or a quiet withdrawal.
These subtle shifts are early warning signs they’re to help you catch dis-ease (imbalance) early.
Try giving each BEAM area a simple 1–10 score once a day. A=Keep track in a notebook, make a calendar note, anything. Over time, patterns emerge.
You’ll begin to notice what supports your dog to gently maintain and regain balance.
Embrace Symptoms Like Friends
When symptoms show up, fear follows. I know it does for me.
But what if we reframe that? What if a symptom is a message from a wise gardener telling us something in the soil has shifted?
Our dog’s body is always reaching toward balance. Symptoms are part of that reach. They are information. How we respond (after we react) matters a lot.
When we slow down, breathe, and soften, we are not just comforting our dog. We are changing their internal state. Dogs don’t separate the emotional from the physical the way we sometimes do.
For them it is all one experience.
Our presence, our touch, the way we hold them when we’re scared — that is all data their body receives and responds to. This is quantum biology. This is what Schrödinger was pointing toward.
So stay curious. Ask: what changed? What is this telling me?
The Four Ps can help guide you. Is this symptom Persistent, or returning or not resolving? Prominent — standing out strongly? Problematic — affecting quality of life? Peculiar — unusual for your dog specifically?
One or more of those Ps may mean it’s time for a closer look by your local conventional (and ideally open-minded) vet. And a conversation with your whole-istic veterinarian or pet professional who can help understand the symptom clues.
The shift from fear to listening brings you back into partnership with your dog’s healing — which is exactly where you belong.
One Simple Invitation
This June, you don’t need to overhaul everything.
Spend a little more time outside together. Notice your dog’s BEAM. Pause before reacting. Add one small moment of joy each day. Let them sniff longer than usual. Keep a little journal — and write down the tail wags, not just the symptoms. Trust that these things matter.
Our healthy dogs are like beautiful quantum garden miracles. Who are balanced enough to experience all of life joyfully with freedom and flexibility.
Maybe today just visualize standing quietly in the morning sun with your dog. No rush. No schedule. Nowhere to go. Just warmth, other sensations, breath, and connection.
While healing happens.
