When Instinct Clashes with Advice: A Maltese’s Journey Through AIHA and Vaccine Decisions
By Jeff Feinman, VMD, CVH.
Molly, a tiny, snow-white Maltese with a heart twice the size of her tiny body, had always been the light of her family’s life. Her playful antics and endless affection filled their home with joy until she faced her first serious health challenge. It started just days after her routine vaccinations. At first, her guardians tried to quiet their growing worry, telling themselves she was just tired from the shots. But as they watched their vibrant little girl become a shadow of herself—lethargic, with pale gums and no interest in food—their hearts knew something was terribly wrong before their minds could process it.
A rushed trip to the emergency vet led to a devastating diagnosis: Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA)—a condition where the immune system mistakenly destroys red blood cells. The vet explained that while it could have been triggered by her vaccinations, they couldn’t confirm it. Instead, they focused on immediate treatment: steroids, immune suppressants, and hospitalization to save Molly’s precious life.
A Discovery Through Research
While Molly fought in the hospital, her guardians were left with more questions than answers. They couldn’t shake the haunting connection—her symptoms began so soon after the vaccines. When they brought up their fears to the local vet, their concerns were dismissed, leaving them feeling unheard and frustrated. Determined to understand what happened to their beloved companion, they dove into their own research.
What they uncovered shook them to their core: a well-documented association between vaccines and AIHA in dogs. This wasn’t just coincidence or paranoia—it was a known risk, one they had never been warned about. The discovery left them feeling betrayed by a system they had trusted implicitly with their precious Molly’s care.
Turning to Holistic Healing
In their darkest hour, hope emerged through an unexpected path. Their search led them to homeopathy and holistic veterinary care, where they found a vet who saw Molly not just as a patient, but as a whole being capable of healing herself with the right support. This gentle, comprehensive approach didn’t just treat Molly’s condition—it transformed her entire well-being.
Day by day, they watched in amazement as their beloved girl responded to individualized homeopathic remedies, flourished on a nutrient-rich diet, and grew stronger through treatments focused on building her natural resilience. The sparkle returned to her eyes, her energy bounded back, and her blood work showed what their hearts already knew—Molly was coming back to them.
A Crossroads: Vaccinations and Fear
A year later, Molly’s guardians faced what felt like an impossible choice. The vet was recommending parvo and Lyme disease vaccinations. “She’ll be fine,” came the reassurance, but their hearts raced with memories of those terrifying days in the emergency hospital. Could they risk watching their precious girl fight for her life again?
This time, though, something was different. Their fear wasn’t paralyzing—it was guiding them to trust their instincts and seek a different path. They realized the real challenge wasn’t about vaccines versus no vaccines—it was about finding a more balanced approach to protecting their beloved companion.
The Path to Pet Wellness
Their search led them to Holistic Actions! and the Path to Pet Wellness, a framework that finally aligned with their deepest instincts about Molly’s care. Instead of focusing solely on fighting external threats, this approach emphasized strengthening what truly mattered—Molly’s inner balance and natural resilience.
The terrain-based approach of Holistic Actions! taught them to:
- Watch and respond to BEAM (Behavior, Energy, Appetite, Mood)—their window into Molly’s true well-being
- Nurture her immune system’s natural strength
- Understand how her inner balance determined her ability to stay healthy
- Use titer testing when needed for practical requirements like grooming or boarding
- Focus on building health rather than just fighting disease
For Molly’s guardians, this approach brought something priceless: peace of mind and renewed confidence in caring for their beloved companion.
A New Perspective on Health
Through Molly’s journey, her family discovered something profound: true health isn’t built on fear, but on understanding and supporting the body’s natural wisdom. They learned to shift their focus from fighting against illness to nurturing Molly’s natural vitality and resilience.
For pet parents walking a similar path, know that you’re not alone in your concerns and that there are gentle, effective alternatives available. You can learn to reduce your pet’s susceptibility to illness while enhancing their joy and vitality.

Nice! Well-written and very accessible.
Dear Jeff,
Thank you again.
Our little Neo has his appointment for his Rabies Vaccine on 3.10. I know required by law. Within the later part of March he will have his Lepto vaccine. We do not get Neo vaccinated for any other vaccines and the only reason we do Rabies is it is the law. Rabies and Lepto only because we live in a mountain top rural community with several various wild animals. We have always been cautious about vaccines and partake in titers on all others. Your thoughts?
