The Art of Living with a Dog: A Transformational Path to Wellness for Both Ends of the Leash
By Tamara Tokash, Dog Lifestyle Expert.
If we genuinely seek health and happiness for our dogs, we must look beyond them. It starts with us. The path to a fulfilling, harmonious life with our pets requires us to look in the mirror and ask, Are we happy and healthy? It’s a pivotal question because, as much as dogs bring joy into our lives, a well-lived life for them begins with a balanced, intentional life for us.
I’ve worked with dogs and their humans for decades , studying, researching, and developing a unique approach that integrates human and canine wellness. I call it The Art of Living with a Dog, a holistic, evidence-based approach that reshapes how we connect, understand, and live alongside our dogs. It’s a blueprint designed for transformation on both ends of the leash.
Why Wellness Matters for Both You and Your Dog
Dogs aren’t just pets; they’re life partners. They have an uncanny way of reflecting our emotions and behaviors back at us, making us more mindful and compassionate. But with this privilege comes responsibility. For a truly harmonious life, we must prioritize the health and happiness of ourselves and our dogs and re-examine what we consume and how it impacts both species. What dogs and people need is quite different from the bag of goods that’s being sold. Let’s rethink how we live with dogs and make animals healthy again! It’s not just about feeding them the right food or teaching obedience; it’s about creating a lifestyle where both species thrive together.
My collection, The Art of Living with a Dog embodies this wellness philosophy. At its core is a concept called SYNERGY, which emphasizes that a truly fulfilled life is one where nutrition, behavior, and relationship-building intersect seamlessly. My wellness plan dives deep into these areas, fostering a life of harmony and balance for you and your dog.
Dispelling the Dog Training Myth: It’s About Dog Learning
What if I told you that much of what we’ve been taught about raising dogs is incomplete? Traditional “dog training” implies a one-sided exchange —commands given, commands obeyed. However, my experience has shown that dogs thrive not under rigid transactional, fear-based suppressive training but through mindful, respectful learning that brings out the best in them as individuals.
Look at the dog you share your life with. Really look, and take a deep breath. He/she is hard-wired to avoid conflict, yet we frequently create it. Dogs are here briefly, and we are blessed to share our lives with them. Take time each day to connect with your free-spirited companion. I promise it’s one of the harbingers of change for a happy, healthy life together!
Each dog has a unique personality, and just like humans, they have different strengths and quirks. Nurturing these qualities and honoring individuality can help us build a deeper, more meaningful relationship. This approach allows you and your dog to flourish, creating an effortless flow.
Life Skills for Dogs…and Humans
A happy, healthy life with your dog involves much more than just knowing commands or feeding a healthy diet. These “tricks” are empty and don’t assimilate dogs into our modern world. Dogs are ancient animals struggling to figure out what is “expected” of them, and in doing so, our unrealistic expectations fracture a bond that could otherwise be strong and bountiful. Dogs need and want realistic coping skills so we can both enjoy one another’s company. My wellness blueprint teaches essential life skills to foster a harmonious relationship, covering three interconnected tenets:
- Behavior: Behavior goes beyond basic obedience training; it’s about learning to communicate in a way that fosters mutual understanding. When we communicate effectively, our dogs can grasp what we need from them, making life together harmonious and fulfilling.
- Nutrition: Nutrition is foundational for both mental and physical health. I emphasize a diet that promotes vitality, helping dogs (and their humans) thrive.
- Life Skills: Life skills are essential for helping our dogs exist peacefully within our shared environment. By teaching them to understand the world around them, we address and alleviate common issues like separation anxiety and reactivity, allowing them to feel secure and confident in various situations.
Every choice we make has an impact. What we consume affects our mind, body, and spirit, which is as true for dogs as it is for us. Therefore, The Art of Living with a Dog prioritizes conscious choices that steer away from convenience and toward conscious wellness.
Embracing Synergy: More Than a Well-Trained Dog
Achieving a well-balanced life with a dog isn’t about rigid obedience; it’s about attaining SYNERGY, where all elements of life are aligned. A “well-trained” dog means little if it’s achieved at the cost of a poor diet or constant stress. I aim to help people move past the illusion that obedience alone defines a good dog and instead create a lifestyle where both you and your dog experience harmony and well-being.
The Art of Living with a Dog is built on principles of ancient wisdom and modern science, marrying tradition with evidence-based insights. Each component is designed to support your dog’s health and happiness while improving your quality of life. This way, you evolve together, reaping the rewards at both ends of the leash.
Reflection: Is Your Dog Happy?
To live a meaningful life with our dogs, reflecting on our actions and their impact is essential. Ask yourself:
- Is my dog happy?
- What is it like to live with me?
- Am I mindful of how my behavior affects my dog’s and my well-being?
- Do I have realistic expectations for my dog?
- What healthy choices can I make today for a more fulfilling life together?
Each answer brings clarity and can spark positive changes, helping your dog live a life that’s not only free of suffering but filled with joy. No dog is perfect, nor should we expect them to be. Instead, let’s embrace their unique spirit and commit to a life of health, happiness, and respect.
