3 Myths Keeping Your Dog Sick (And Your Vet Quiet)
By Dr Cathy Alinovi, DVM.
Have you ever noticed how the same problems keep showing up in your dog… even after rounds of medication, “prescription” diets, or a new brand of kibble? You fix one issue, something else pops up. You patch that, it returns six months later.
There’s a reason this cycle never ends — and it starts with the myths pet owners are fed (pun intended) every single day. Some of them come from well-meaning veterinarians. Some come straight from the pet food industry. All of them keep dogs stuck and sick and dog parents spending on “fixes” that don’t last.
So, let’s clear the air.
Myth #1: “The bag says it’s complete and balanced — so it must be.”
This one drives me crazy. “Complete and balanced” doesn’t mean “nutrient-dense” or “species appropriate.” It means the food meets MINIMUM requirements for survival… not optimal health.
Most commercial pet foods rely on cheap fillers, high-heat processing, and ingredients like powdered cellulose (yes, literally wood pulp, saw dust— it’s right there on the label). Dogs may survive on these food products, but they rarely thrive.
And here’s the quiet part your vet may not say out loud:
When nutrition is low-quality, chronic issues show up — itchy skin, gut trouble, ear infections, lethargy, anxiety. You treat the symptoms endlessly (cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching) but the root cause never changes.
Myth #2: “If your dog is itchy, it must be environmental allergies… or fleas.”
To be fair, sometimes that’s true… but not nearly as often as pet owners are told.
Most itching starts inside the gut long before it shows up on the skin. Here’s how it works for your beloved dog: Diet triggers inflammation → inflammation weakens the immune system → the immune system overreacts to everything. ENTER: red, itchy skin that your dog literally can’t shake.
Fix the gut, and suddenly that “environmental allergy” is gone.
But here’s what happens in most clinics:
Dog comes in itchy → medication is prescribed.
Medications wear off → dog is itchy again.
Repeat. New vet visit. More tests. More prescriptions.
No one talks about the fact that changing to a real-food diet often reduces itching faster and more permanently than any drug on the shelf. Even when I ran a more traditional veterinary clinic, I still treated 80% of what walked through my doors with nutrition. Now, at the helm of a holistic pet wellness company, I do the same, but I get to treat dogs from all over the world, virtually.
Myth #3: “Chronic problems just come with age.”
No.
Most chronic issues come from chronic irritation and inflammation— often nutritional.
Your senior dog isn’t “just slowing down.” He or she may be lacking nutrients only real food provides: amino acids, digestive enzymes, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals. Even… moisture. Watch how fast that dry nose goes away once real food is introduced!!
When owners switch from dry, high-carb, overly processed food to fresh, dog-appropriate nutrition, they are shocked at what returns:
Energy.
Shinier coat.
Normal stools.
Clear eyes.
Better mobility.
A happier dog.
Age isn’t the enemy here. Poor nutrition is.
Bottom Line:
Your dog’s body isn’t working against you.
It’s responding to what’s going into it.
If something has been “mysteriously” wrong with your dog for years — itching, licking, hot spots, diarrhea, behavior changes, ear infections — there’s almost always a nutritional root.
Start there, and you’ll be amazed what your dog can heal, naturally.

So good to hear good sense from a vet. Species specific diet is the cornerstone of health. For everyone. There is so often a trap from holistic vets that says what’s good for us is good for them. NO! It needs to be species specific. Follow Nature. She has the answers. We just need to listen.
So true, Madeleine. Also important is to realize that within a species, each individual may have different needs. In 45 years of practice I have seen dogs thrive on almost every diet out there. I have also been challenged when, because of the energetic template they were born with, they needed deep healing before they could thrive on any diet.
