Everyday Moments, Extraordinary Bonds: 10 Intentional Habits That Will Transform You & Your Dog
By Tamara Tokash.
I want you to pause for just a moment… and really pay attention to your dog.
Think about the way they look at you – the softness in their eyes, the quiet trust, the little wiggle in their body when you walk into the room. That is the epitome of pure love.
Here’s the thing: your dog is already paying attention to you. Every sigh, every shift, every glance, and sadly every disconnect; they notice it all. And when we slow down enough to notice them back, something powerful happens: connection deepens, gratitude expands, and love flows more freely. That’s what love in action looks like.
Test out these 10 simple yet powerful habits that you can do to help you and your dog feel happier, healthier, and more deeply connected than ever before. It all starts with learning to pay attention.
10 Habits for Happier, Healthier Dogs & Humans
1. Rise & Reset
Dog: Step outside to connect/ground with the earth’s magnetic field to reset the body, mind and spirit. The fresh air, and natural blue light will set the internal clock.
You: Step outside with them barefoot if possible, feel the earth beneath you, breathe deeply, and begin the day with gratitude.
Pay attention to the sensations of the morning, the sounds, the light, the energy beneath your feet.
2. Nourish From the Inside Out
Dog: Offer raw goat milk before breakfast for pre/probiotics and vital nutrients.
You: Drink warm filtered water with a pinch of sea salt to cleanse, detox and hydrate yourself.
Pay attention to how your body feels when it’s nourished intentionally.
3. Explore!
Dog: Take them on a sniffari and let them lead an exploratory sniff walk, the dog version of mindfulness. Sniffing is a destressor that all dogs benefit from!
You: As your dog sniffs, observe one new thing along the way, a texture, a smell, a sound, patterns, and explore the world together.
Pay attention to how nature is necessary for healing the body, mind and soul.
4. Find the Sweet Spot
Dog: Get down on their level and discover their favorite place to be touched.
You: Slow your breath, be aware of your dog’s responses, and allow the moment of connection to soften you both.
Pay attention to the power of the breath. It is the life force that connects us all to the present moment.
5. Feed Whole, Live Foods
Dog: Add one fresh, wholesome food daily: raw, gently cooked, ideally organic to their diet. You: Eat something vibrant and alive, like fruit, greens or nuts. Be mindful of the food’s texture, taste and smell.
Pay attention to the energetics that only come from real food. You will see and feel a difference.
6. Smile at Your Dog
Dog: This will help them feel safe and trust you while diffusing any conflict. Make gentle eye contact, soften your face, and smile at your beloved companion. They understand.
You: Notice what happens inside of yourself and your dog, when you do offer a warm genuine smile. Your shoulders drop, your heart opens, they become relaxed and oxytocin, the love hormone flows.
Pay attention to how good this feels and how your dog responds.
7. Speak Your Gratitude Out Loud
Dog: Say “thank you” for who they are, not just for what they do. They may not understand each word but they sure do grasp the heart felt intention and energy associated.
You: Write down one thing you’re grateful for about your dog and your life each day.
Pay attention to how gratitude shifts your mood and energy.
8. Pause Before You Correct
Dog: When they misbehave, pause before reacting; notice their needs beneath the behavior. What are they trying to tell you, what are they possibly struggling with? You: Check your body before you speak: Are you tense? Frustrated? Distracted?
Pay attention to how balance and ease begin with slowing down and moving through the moment.
9. Unplug & Just Be
Dog: Spend 10 minutes doing nothing together: no training, no agenda, just presence. That’s right, nada, zip. No expectations, corrections or suppression imposed upon them. You: Put your phone down and breathe.
Pay attention to the quiet bond that grows when you simply sit side by side.
10. Give Thanks for This Moment
Dog: Sit quietly, hand on chest or paw, sharing stillness together.
You: Whisper “thank you” for this breath, this dog, this moment.
Pay attention to how gratitude softens your heart.
Three Core Takeaways
- Pay attention to the little things; they are everything.
Your dog notices your energy, your presence, your love. Slowing down creates space for connection. - Gratitude is a practice, not just a feeling. When we act on gratitude daily, in smiles, in rituals, in shared moments, our bond grows stronger.
- Your attention shapes your connection.
Wherever your attention goes, energy flows. The more present you are, the more joy, trust, and ease you both experience.
Your dog is more than your companion; they are your guide, your mirror, and your teacher. By choosing to pay attention to their needs, their joy, their presence, you discover a deeper kind of gratitude. You notice the small, fleeting moments that make this shared life so precious.
Remember, awareness precedes change. People often seek to control and dominate a dog with training, suppression and unrealistic expectations. Leading to a frustration on both ends of the leash and a misunderstood relationship. Lack of connection is one of the leading causes of behavioral issues. Take the time to see your dog, embrace who they are and accept who they aren’t; and everything else will fall into place.
Every time you pause, breathe, and connect, you send your dog a silent message:
“I see you.
I honor you.
I’m grateful for you.”
These tiny yet powerful habits will transform you both!
That’s gratitude unleashed.
That’s love in action.

My dog has autism (=dysfunctional behavior) and doesn’t like to be talked to, doesn’t like if you look at him and doesn’t like to be touched. He doesn’t like to play. And I respect that. Mindfulness has changed him (and me) a little bit. So a lot of your advice is useless for this special dog, that is more independent than most. But we changed together in having a better life. He is a happy dog..
Good to hear you are in tune with your dog! They are individuals just like us. Sounds like you actually are implementing some of the suggestions, such as paying attention while evolving and growing. Best to both of you!
